Time to Think about the Census

That's right, it's that time again.  As we celebrate the arrival of 2010 and ponder our resolutions for the new year, it's time to remember the importance of the next decennial count.
For Houston , the Census provides an opportunity to receive much needed funds that can help better plan for and serve our residents for the next 10 years.
In the 2000 Census, Houstonians were seriously undercounted.  This time around, the City of Houston is working aggressively to ensure that its residents receive the full benefits of being counted in the upcoming census. Through Houston Counts, a grassroots, community-based initiative, the City encourages all Houstonians to fill out and submit Census forms (click here to view) when they arrive in the mail in March and submit them by April 1, 2010.
Make yourself count:
·         It's easy - It's only 10 questions.
·         It's safe - Your questionnaire is used to produce statistics about our community. Federal law protects the information on your form for 72 years. Information cannot and will not be shared with   the IRS,

Citizenship and Immigration Services, or any other government agency.
·         It's important - Houston failed to receive nearly $234 million because of the undercounts of the 2000 Census, and many areas are still not receiving the benefits (such as healthcare, improved education and
other services) they would have received if the count had been accurate. (If you live outside Houston , your city may also have been undercounted.)
An accurate count of Houston residents can help make the difference between gaining or losing schools, health clinics, senior centers, social services, public transportation or other critical services needed in our community. Here are 50 more reasons why it's important to make every Houstonian count.
Do your part in making Houston Count in the 2010 Census by clicking on the following links.  Follow Houston Counts on Facebook and Twitter. Make a bigger impact in your community by becoming an official Census volunteer through the City of Houston Complete Count Committee. And remember, the best gift you can give yourself and your community is to fill out and submit your Census form by April 1, 2010.
